November Happenings

Our Thankful Tree
We hosted Thanksgiving on the Shore again this year.  It was a smaller crowd than past years, but my Mom and Dad joined us for some yummy fried turkey (and all that other stuff). Thanks to Mom, we made a Thankful tree.  We do have a lot to be thankful for. (I spent the month of November listing the things I am thankful for (click to see that post). )

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving Chris was heading to the VT vs UVA game in Charlottesville with Jamie so the girls and I rode with him to meet up with Monica and the kids in Charles City at Damaw's house.   While the boys enjoyed a day of football Monica and I enjoyed some downtime with the kids.

After our day picking pmpkins we met Kathy and picked up Chris' dad.  He came out to the Shore to spend a week with us.  The girls had a great time with Grandpa and we really enjoyed his visit.

We made a "fairy house" from some of our picked pumpkins.

Swinging at the park.

3 generations of Bentleys.
We made a trip to Front Royal for a visit the weekend before Halloween.  Who would have though we would be heading out for snow gear on Saturday morning!

November Bonfire

In early November we had a bonfire night in the backyard.  The girls roasted hot dogs and marshmallows and Chris and I had clams.  We got some tunes going and chilled out for the night.  It was a perfect night, not too cold, but cold enough that a fire felt good.

Keeping it in perspective...

“But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this.

I did not live in the moment enough.

This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night.

I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed.

I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.”

I just have to share...

2 new Sarah Elizabeth quotes:

We took a family shopping trip to Trader Joes.  Chris pushed a cart with SE in the front and I pushed one with Grace in the front.  Chris left SE to get a cup of coffee and she started to get antsy.  So I told her to "sit tight".
To this she responded:
"Grace, I will sit tight.  You sit loose."

Last week Grace made a pinky promise with Chris.  Sarah came runnng from her bedroom saying,
"I want to make a thumb promise because a pinky promise is too hard."

A Month of Daily Thankfuls

Monica told me I had to read One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp this summer.  So I did.  And then I bought the audio version so I could listen to it again during my morning and afternoon commutes this fall.  I  passed the audio version on to my mom and dad.  Then I found the One Thousand Gifts Facebook page, and then http://www.aholyexperience.com/ .  All of these events/experiences combined with a change in churches this fall has been propelling me towards something.  I think that something is: living a life full of thanks. We are all given so much.  In our human eyes it falls into the categories of good and bad.  But I have been learning that no matter how our eyes see it, from God all is good.  In the end, God's perspective is so much greater than ours. Therefore we need to make our human eyes see though a thankful lens, so that our lives become about living in gratitude.
