San Diego- more photos

Our family trip to San Diego was so much fun! Poor Chris, it wasn't really a vacation for him because he had to go to talks and present his info. But we managed to include him as much as possible.

I was dreading sharing a room with the girls, who were sharing a bed. But they did GREAT! I think they were so exhausted each night that they just passed out as soon as their head hit the pillow. Chris and I didn’t have to sit in the dark, we were able to hang out and watch TV- it actually was really easy.

We had a few medical hiccups along the trip. SE came down with pink eye the day before we left; Grace woke up with it the day we were leaving. Luckily we know a doctor (the farm owner). So Clarke called in a prescription for some drops before we flew out. Then Grace woke up in the middle of the night, our second night, throwing up. Luckily, again, it was a one-time event. It was not the stomach bug that had been going through her school, whew!! We dodged a bullet with that one!

Our flights went pretty smoothly too. The way out was tougher for the girls towards the end, they were so tired and couldn’t get comfortable. On the way back they were so used to falling asleep on buses and trolleys almost every night that they were pros on the plane.

We went to the zoo 2 days and SeaWorld 1 day. The other days we went to the hotel pool and explored San Diego via the bus and trolley system. The girls and I did pretty well with that. We took a few wrong buses during the first few days but then we got the hang of it. Grace would ask, "How many buses will we need to take today?" Now at home she and Sarah Elizabeth play that they are taking a bus to Food Lion with their babies. They are usually waiting for bus number "6-5-7" or the pink bus.

The Zoo was HUGE so we did it over 2 days. The girls had fun, especially in the petting zoo. Although it is funny to travel across the country and the highlight be animals our neighbors own.

Sea World was really neat. The girls got to feed sea lions, see a sea lion/seal show, play in the Sesame Bay of Play, and see the “modified” Shamu show (no trainers in the water). Grace was tall enough to go on the helicopter simulator ride to go see the polar bears. She didn’t understand how SE and I could just walk there if she took a helicopter to get there.

On our last night we went to Seaport Village in downtown San Diego on the Harbor. While we were waiting in line for the carousel a film crew approached us and asked for permission to film the girls for a commercial about Seaport Village to be shown in San Diego hotels. They said we looked like a "perfect happy carousel family"- whatever that means?? They set up the lights and camera right in front of Grace's horse. The rest of us blended into the background and she became the star of the show. She followed directions and didn't look at the camera and smiled off to the side. They showed us what they had filmed afterward and played Grace and Sarah Elizabeth with a trip to Ben and Jerry's for ice cream. We have their contact info to get a copy of the commercial when they are finished- so stay tuned!

Our final San Diego activity was a ride in Cinderella’s carriage, courtesy of the Cinderella Carriage Company. Grace was asleep in the stroller up until the time we got onto the carriage, after that she was wide awake and very serious about her responsibility to watch over the carriage for Cinderella as Princess Grace.

Over the week we spent in San Diego I think I walked a million miles. Grace was quite a trooper because most of the time it was just me so she had to walk while SE was in the stroller. A few times I wore SE in the backpack so Grace could ride, I wish I had a picture of that as I walked through downtown San Diego. The bus and trolley station was just under a mile away so we walked to and back from there about 4 times a day plus the walking at the zoo (why do all zoos seem to be built into a hill?), Sea World, Old Town, Seaport Village, and to and from bus stops downtown.

It was a great week, but it took us a few days to recover once we got back to the East Coast!
